My name is Federica Isabella Malfatti and starting from January 2024 I will be Assistant Professor at the Department of Philosophy, Theological Faculty, at the University of Innsbruck.
I studied Philosophy at the University of Pavia, Italy. I spent research periods at the universities of Jerusalem, Mainz, and Heidelberg. I was a Visiting Fellow at the University of Cologne in 2017, and I worked with Catherine Z. Elgin at Harvard in 2019. I work on understanding, trust, and autonomy. Understanding was also the topic of my PhD thesis entitled Verstehen verstehen, which has been published with open access by the Schwabe Verlag thanks to a generous funding of the FWF. I am the leader and primary investigator of the TWF funded project TrAU! You can find out more about the project here. [September 2024] I'll give a keynote talk at the University of Alghero on the role of AI in education within the conference New Perspectives in the Philosophy of AI. Thanks to Guido Seddone for the kind invitation. [August 2024] I'll give a talk at a Workshop on Understanding and Reason, organized by John Bengson and David Sosa within the World Congress of Philosophy in Rome. I'll talk about reasonable disagreements in understanding! [July 2024] Can't wait to be in Oviedo again for the XI Conference of the Spanish Society of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science. I'll talk about the role of puzzlement in inquiry and understanding. [April 2024] I've been invited to give a talk at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) in Amsterdam, within the conference "Understanding Science and Technology". I'll talk about collective understanding! [April 2024] Together with my colleague Katherine Dormandy, I am organizing a conference at Innsbruck on the topic of Gatekeeping in Science.
